Memphis PA announcer brain cramps on the Tigers’ coach

Old habits die hard. Even if it takes a few years for them to resurface.

As Memphis public address announcer Chuck Roberts wrapped his pregame introductions for the Tigers’ game against Murray State, he no doubt thought back to the 2000’s roster.

And the head coach of your Tigers, John Calipari.”

The crowd booed. Angrily.

Calipari, of course, hasn’t coached at Memphis since accepted the Kentucky job in the spring of 2009. Josh Pastner hasn’t had the same highs as the end of Calipari’s tenure, but he’s picked up right where Calipari’s recruiting left off, won at least 24 games his first two seasons and reached the NCAA tournament last season.

Not that Roberts forgot any of that. He’s been the Memphis P.A. since 1996 and says the pregame introductions are one of his favorite parts of the job. But this is one he’d certainly rather forget.

It didn’t bode well for the No. 21 Tigers, either. They lost to Murray State and dropped to 5-3.
