Tuesday’s slate and what to watch

Mike Miller

It’s Jimmy V night, which means the speech is coming. Some good games, too. Remains to be seen which is more compelling TV.

(All times ET; TV info courtesy of HDSportsGuide)

Missouri vs. Villanova, 7 p.m. (ESPN)
The Tigers are a surprising 7-0 under new coach Frank Haith, including routs against Cal and Notre Dame. The offense is clicking, mostly because they can’t miss and aren’t turning the ball over. (Fans of departed coach Mike Anderson are also pleased that the up-tempo style has remained.) Much of that credit belongs to the always-incredible Marcus Denmon and the remarkably improved jumper of Kim English. That said, ‘Nova’s an intriguing lineup because it matches up well with Missouri at every position. If it only produced like Mizzou …

Washington vs. Marquette, 9 p.m. (ESPN)
Until the Eagles beat Wisconsin on Saturday, it was tough to tell if Buzz Williams’ squad was simply beating up on inferior teams or if it was really that good. Might be the latter. Jae Crowder, Darius Johnson-Odom & Co. are a ruthlessly efficient machine thus far, both on offense and defense. Washington hasn’t been as consistent, but – just like the earlier Jimmy V game – it’s a promising matchup that could yield dramatic results.

Memphis at Miami, 9 p.m. (ESPN2)
If you haven’t watched Malcolm Grant and Durand Scott play, you’re missing out. Luckily, Miami’s backcourt duo gets to test its skill against a Tigers team that’s once again incredibly talented but once again underperforming. There’s nothing wrong with losses to Michigan and Georgetown, but those are the games Memphis is supposed to win. A road win at Miami would be a nice start.

George Mason at Virginia, 7 p.m. (ESPN3)
Didn’t expect Tony Bennett’s team to be 7-1 at this point? Don’t worry. You’re not alone. The Cavs have finally embraced Bennett’s deliberate, efficient style, which has resulted in an impressive defense and only one befuddling loss thus far. That brings me to George Mason, which has two befuddling losses. (Standard for a Paul Hewitt team.)
