Arizona’s Sean Miller at odds with freshman Sidiki Johnson

According to a report from Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star, freshman forward Sidiki Johnson’s days at Arizona could be numbered.

Johnson was recently suspended indefinitely for “violations of team policy,” the school said in a release this past Monday. He did not return with the team to Arizona, following the Wildcats’ 67-57 loss to Mississippi State in New York City on November 18th.

It appears things have been made pretty clear for Johnson, and he will fall on one of two sides of that line.

“We have an agreement and if he meets this agreement, he could potentially be reinstated,” head coach Sean Miller told the Arizona Daily Star. “He could also be dismissed.”

And there’s very little optimism.

As Pascoe reports, when Miller was asked if he was liking the odds of Johnson meeting the terms of the agreement, he was blunt.

“No.”

Johnson, a 6’8”, 240-pound New York City native, has played seven minutes in three games for the Wildcats, totaling one point and two rebounds.

Arizona hopes Johnson will at least finish out the academic semester before releasing him, if the situation turns in that direction. Schools lose a point on their Academic Progress Rating if a player is released while ineligible.

Other schools are not allowed to contact Johnson if he has not been released, but expect heavy interest from major programs if he leaves.

Johnson is a high-level athlete who works well in a transition offense and running the floor. In the absence of any off-the-court problems, most schools wouldn’t mind adding an athlete and rolling the dice.

Coming out of high school, he garnered interest from a number of Big East schools, including Pitt, West Virginia, Providence, and St. John’s.

Fellow freshman Angelo Chol has been solid in Johnson’s absence on the block, when he gets significant minutes.

Chol had a combined 12 points and 13 rebounds in Arizona’s first two wins of the season, but his minutes have fallen off, since.

The Wildcats are coming off two straight losses and will try to bounce back against New Mexico State on Tuesday.
