The ACC is the only undefeated league left ... for now

Thanks to a DeShawn Painter jumper with 4.2 seconds left, which gave NC State a 60-58 victory over Princeton last night, the ACC remains as the last remaining unbeaten conference in the country.

Seriously.

As a whole, the ACC is 26-0. No other league in the country has fewer than two losses.

On the surface, that doesn’t sound all that impressive. Duke and North Carolina are the only two teams that have played any competition -- both beat Michigan State fairly handily while Duke was able to avoid a collapse against Belmont -- unless you consider Central Florida competition for Florida State. High-major teams should be winning their guarantee games at home.

But when you dig a little deeper, its understandable that this would be a surprise because, frankly, the bottom of the ACC has a couple of teams that look like mid-majors.

We all know how bad Wake Forest was last season, and they had an off-season full of players getting in trouble with the law leading to transfers and suspensions. And while neither win has been pretty, the Demon Deacons have ridden Travis McKie’s coattails to a 2-0 record. Georgia Tech is 2-0 as well, winning their first two games by double figures despite playing without Glen Rice Jr.

Even Boston College, who returned just one player from the 2010-2011 team, still managed to win their first game of the season -- an ugly, 67-64 nail-biter against New Hampshire -- and do their part to keep this unbeaten streak alive.

This post may only have a shelf life of about seven hours, however.

There’s a good chance that, by 7:00 pm tonight, the ACC will have their first loss of the season. Maryland, who is playing without Pe’Shon Howard and Alex Len, will be taking on No. 15 Alabama and their big, athletic front line down in Puerto Rico. Stranger things have happened, yes, but I think its a good thing that I was able to get this post written today.
