Early on Saturday morning, Kevin Duffy of the Danbury News-Times broke open the story of the ineligibility of Ryan Boatright.

An NCAA source with knowledge of the investigation of UConn men’s basketball freshman Ryan Boatright’s eligibility said Friday that Reggie Rose, Boatright’s AAU coach with the D-Rose All Stars, purchased a plane ticket for Boatright. The source also said that once the NCAA concludes its investigation Boatright could potentially miss three to six games.

This isn’t the first time that Rose has been involved in an NCAA investigation. During the 2007-2008 season, he was found to have incurred $2,260 in travel expenses with his brother’s Memphis team. That season was wiped from the NCAA’s record books due to a fraudulent SAT test taken by Derrick. That said, neither the NCAA nor the compliance office at UConn have been in contact with Rose yet.

UConn’s first four games are against Columbia, Wagner, Maine and Coppin State. The Huskies then head to the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament in the Bahamas, where they get UNC Asheville in the first round and the winner of Central Florida and College of Charleston in the second round. If Boatright is to miss the full six games, he’ll be back by the time UConn would have to play Harvard or Florida State.

Assuming Duffy is right and that Boatright’s suspension will only be six games -- I guess that also assumes the NCAA’s investigation into the matter takes a matter of days, not weeks -- the freshman point guard will be back in action in plenty of time of an opponent that the Huskies may actually have trouble with. Boatright is important because he is the only scholarship player that can play the point guard spot if Shabazz Napier is hurt, in foul trouble or simply playing poorly.
