Fran Dunphy growing the ‘stache back for Movember

For folks in the college basketball world, Movember went viral when Vermont’s Evan Fjeld grew out a spectacular mustache to help raise money and awareness for cancer. Fjeld’s mother passed away just days before his Vermont team won the 2010 America East Championship.

Fjeld has since shaved the ‘stache, however, but he’s not alone in getting rid of his lip critter. Old Dominion head coach Blaine Taylor got rid of his mustache over the summer, as did Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. Dunphy’s decision was unique, however. He had made a bet with former Temple star Dionte Christmas that if Christmas finished up his undergrad degree at the school, he would shave.

And lo-and-behold, Christmas graduated. And Dunphy made good on his bet and shaved off the mustache he had maintained for 40 years.

He couldn’t even last a month without it, however. Dunphy will be regrowing his mustache to support Movember.

“Anytime I can help fight this dreaded disease I will do it,” Dunphy said in a statement. “This is a great promotion spearheaded by our athletic website provider, SIDEARM Sports, and I am more than happy to lend my name, and facial hair, to the cause.”

SIDEARM Sports is making a donation to Movember, which helps promote funding to fight cancer through the growing of mustaches (Whoever came up with this idea is a genius, by the way. Giving men an excuse to grow ratty mustaches?), for every athletic department official around the country that grows a mustache.

Let’s call a spade, a spade. Dunphy was growing this ‘stache back no matter what, so its pretty awesome that he put it off until it could help raise money for a good cause.
