Swiperboy says he’s ready to be tougher for Vols

Swiperboy is getting serious about hoops.

Tennessee’s Renaldo Woolridge has made more headlines during his career for his prowess behind the mic, rather than on the court. Not that it’s a lack of talent. He’s always looked the part of a star player. The 6-9, 220-pound forward has his dad’s build and a few flashes of brilliance.

Woolridge vows his senior season will be different. He’s ready to be more physical.

As he told the Knoxville News-Sentinel last week, new coach Cuonzo Martin wants Woolridge to be a tough, forceful presence down low. Part of that’s by necessity – he’s one of the tallest guys on the roster – but they also think he can be that guy. And Woolridge is ready to embrace that role.

“... I thought about it, and I absolutely trust this coaching staff, so I’ve bought in,’' Woolridge said. “It’s different for me, but the way I see it, Coach is adding to my versatility as far as what I can bring the team.

“I am one of the tallest if not the tallest on the team, and with my length I’ll be the same height as most guys I guard,’' he said. “I think my quickness and mobility will be the key; I just have to use my footwork to my advantage.

“And, now I can truly say I have played every position on the floor.”

I doubt Woolridge turns into Brian Williams or Wayne Chism. He’s never been that guy and never will be. But less finesse and a little more brawn would be ideal for him and the Vols.

Anything to give Cameron Tatum a little support.
