George Mason’s backcourt now a little thin

George Mason returns enough talent from last season’s 27-7 squad to secure a spot among the Colonial’s top teams and perhaps even with the top 25.

But it’ll be problematic without guard Andre Cornelius.

As the Washington Times reports, the senior guard was suspended after being charged with credit card fraud and credit card larceny. Cornelius, 22, was taken to jail and released on bond.

“Cornelius has been summarily suspended from the team as a result of the charges filed against him,” the school said in a statement. “The suspension will be in effect until the legal and University judicial processes have been completed.”

He started all 34 games for the Patriots last season, averaging 9.5 points and 2.3 rebounds a game. May not sound like much, but after losing wings Cam Long (to graduation) and Luke Hancock (transferred to Louisville) they need every bit of backcourt scoring and experience they can get.

But hey, maybe new coach Paul Hewitt can toss Corey Edwards into the mix or that Bryon Allen or Vertrail Vaughns are ready to increase their minutes.
