Let’s recap Jim Calhoun’s month, shall we?
The Connecticut coach got quite the two-fer. Athletic director Jeff Hathaway, one of Calhoun’s least-favorite people at the school, retired. And it wasn’t one of those long, happy farewells, either. More like “Hey, Jeff. Get your stuff. Now.”
Then Andre Drummond, perhaps the top player in the class of 2012, changes his mind and decides to enroll at UConn after all. The move significantly alters the college hoops landscape for 2011-12 and makes the Huskies one of the teams to beat.
And now, in what may be the least shocking development of the summer, Calhoun has informed school officials that yes, he will be coaching this season.
Oh, thanks Jim. Needed that cleared up.
Back before UConn won the 2011 NCAA tournament, it was reasonable to wonder about Calhoun’s future. He’s 69, has a history of health issues and UConn was dealing with various NCAA issues. But the Huskies and Calhoun escaped major punishments and as Calhoun basked in a spring and summer of championship elation, it was clear he wasn’t retiring.
Drummond’s commitment should’ve cleared up any question of that. He wasn’t headed to UConn without knowing Calhoun would be there.
But I guess this is as good a way as any to try and overshadow the latest shady thing Calhoun’s program did. Jim Calhoun wins again.
