Thanks to Texas A&M, we’re back to a realignment mess

Print

Another summer, another conference realignment.

(sighs)

It’s no secret that Texas A&M has been stewing about Texas’ deal with ESPN to create the Longhorn Network. Hey, who wants their in-state rival to have an inherent recruiting edge thanks to a 24/7 channel that shows Texas sports?

But the rumors took a decided step forward when AggieYell.com – a Texas A&M subscription site – declared Thursday that A&M will be moving to the SEC. This is the same site that reported the Aggies were an SEC lock last year and also decided just a month ago that A&M wouldn’t be bolting the Big 12. So there’s that.

Still, there’s something to all this.

Texas A&M board of regents “will meet on Aug. 22 to deliberate and likely vote on an application to join the Southeastern Conference as early as 2012,” according to OrangeBloods.com. There’s no agreement, but it sounds as if the school is ready to bolt, even if it requires paying exit fees that would likely come with leaving the Big 12.

(Of course, an SEC source told Matt Hayes of the Sporting News that the SEC is hardly ready to invite the Aggies and that the Texas Legislature also would need to get involved. Texas A&M cares not for these logistics!)

And it also appears the Big 12 is set to stick with nine schools, provided Oklahoma stays. But hey, it’s another summer of realignment! Anything goes!

The only thing I know for certain? Billy Kennedy would be able to recruit in either conference.
