Andre Drummond took the easy way out. Now it seems increasingly unlikely he’ll ever play in college.
One of 2012’s top recruits, Drummond announced Wednesday that he’ll attend prep school for another season, but it’ll be a new prep school in Connecticut, Wilbraham and Monson. He did list five colleges as possible destinations once he’s done with school: UConn, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgetown and West Virginia.
Now Drummond, a 6-11, 260-pound center, can enjoy another year of dunking on high school kids.
“I have a good relationship with all of those coaching staffs,” Drummond told Adam Finkelstein. “They all have a chance to compete for a national championship, and they prepare their players well for the next level.
“I just wanted to focus on school and basketball and get a chance to be a kid. It’s been crazy, the amount of rumors that have been floating around lately but I just try to ignore it and stay focused on what’s important.”
What’s important was playing in college. Drummond’s already 19. Next year, he’ll be a year removed from his graduating class, which would satisfy the minimum age requirement needed to enter the NBA draft. The NBA lockout – or new minimum age rules – could affect that standing, but I doubt it.
At this rate, he’ll never play in college and he’ll enter the NBA as a raw prospect without the added name recognition college would’ve provided.
But he does get to enjoy being a kid for another year. Maybe that’ll end up being a priceless decision.
