A rare occasion when Kentucky fans may boo Calipari

John Calipari’s summer coaching gig -- he’s trying to lead the Dominican Republic men’s basketball to its first Olympics – might present a rarity in the state of Kentucky.

A crowd cheering against his team.

The D.R. squad started training at the Wildcats’ practice facility on Sunday and will play at least one exhibition against Kentucky alumni to prep for the 10-team tournament that runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 11. (Kentucky Sports Radio says a second game might occur in Louisville on Aug. 16.) Consider it an excellent way to prepare for a tournament in Argentina.

Former Wildcat stars playing in Lexington? That’ll be a pro-Kentucky crowd and then some. Dominican players like Edgar Sosa know what’s coming, too.

From the Lexington Herald-Leader:

“Definitely, when we go out there, we’re going to get booed,” said Sosa, who hit the winning shot when Louisville beat UK in 2009 at Freedom Hall. “We’re pretty much playing against some of the best players to ever suit up in a UK uniform, and we know that. It’s definitely going to be a road game for us.”

Said Calipari, “I’m just hoping I don’t get booed.”

Calipari booed by a Kentucky crowd? Only if the Dominicans win. By 30.
