Mom of top ’12 recruit wishes her alma mater was in play

The top recruit of 2012 is in no hurry to choose a school. Shabazz Muhammad, a 6-6 wing from Las Vegas, is being courted by nearly every top college hoops program in the country. They love his mix of athleticism, size, skill and attitude.

But nobody knows what Muhammad will do. And as the L.A. Times reports, if they do, they’re lying.

“Everybody says that,” he told the paper. “They say I’m a Kansas lean, a Memphis lean, a UCLA lean. It’s all rumors that everybody’s talking about. At the end of the day, everybody’s the same at this point.”

Well, everybody except for his parents’ schools.

His dad, Ron Holmes, played for USC. His mom, Faye, was a track and field star at Long Beach State. Mom’s a little miffed LBS coach Dan Monson didn’t “get involved and see what happened with that.”

Nevermind that Long Beach hasn’t signed a 4-star player in ages, let alone the nation’s top player. Probably wouldn’t have been worth Monson’s time – but Faye won’t be swayed.

“I would have been a major ally,” she told the paper.
