Wake suspends two players, not that it matters much

Wake Forest indefinitely suspended Ty Walker and Melvin Tabb on Monday for a violation of departmental rules.

This might be a good thing.

When you’re coming off an historically awful season, there’s little reason to fret over guys who combined for 5.2 points and 5.5 rebounds a game last season. Sure, both are tabbed on Wake’s website as “rising” players, but that’s being kind. Neither had much impact on last year’s team.

Walker’s a 7-foot center who played in all 32 games, made nine starts and barely registered as a contributor. Sure, he led the team with 79 blocks, but a third of them came in games against Stetson, Hampton and Marist. He’ll be a senior, but is headed for another year as a role player.

Tabb, a 6-8 forward who earned some raves coming out of high school, played in just 14 games as a sophomore. He was dismissed for “conduct detrimental to the team” back in February, but remained in school with the hopes of being reinstated.

If neither player returns, I’m guessing it won’t impact the 2011-12 Wake Forest squad one bit. If anything, it’ll give more playing time to the young group coach Jeff Bzdelik relied on last season.

That group could certainly use it.
