San Diego State lands St. John’s transfer Polee II

San Diego State’s marvelous season – a school record 34 wins, its first AP ranking and a spot in the Sweet 16 – might be impossible to replicate in 2011-12. The Aztecs lost four starters in seniors D.J. Gay, Malcolm Thomas and Billy White, along with sophomore Kawhi Leonard, who declared for the NBA draft.

But it’s on the way.

The Aztecs landed St. John’s transfer Dwayne Polee II, a 6-7 forward who can step into Leonard’s role on the wing. Polee’s even more athletic than Leonard, but doesn’t have his overall game. That’ll come. In the meantime, he’ll be focused on making plays.

“Coach Fisher runs the kind of offense that Dwayne likes – open court, get it out, use all his athleticism,” Dwayne Polee Sr. told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s a great fit for Dwayne.”

Polee II started 27 of 33 games last season for St. John’s, averaging 4.4 points and 2.5 rebounds in nearly 15 minutes a game. He would’ve been the Johnnies’ most experienced returnee.

Only question now is how soon Polee II can get on the court. He’s expected to apply for a hardship waiver – his mother, Yolanda, has an undisclosed medical condition that requires surgery – but it’s unknown if the NCAA will grant it.
