Momo Jones reportedly transferring to Iona

NCAA rules prevented Arizona transfer Lamont “Momo” Jones from landing at St. John’s. But the NYC native still found a school close to home.

Multiple reports indicate Jones will transfer to Iona.

He chose the Gaels over Seton Hall and Hofstra and gives them an instant guard boost. After all, how many Elite Eight point guards are playing in the MAAC right now? Iona returns its top four scorers from last season’s 25-12 squad that just missed a spot in the NCAA tournament.

He’ll be listed as a point guard, but expect him to play more off-guard given that he’s more of a scorer and that the Gaels already have point guard Scott Machado, who averaged 13 points and 7 assists last season. Jones averaged 9.7 and 2.5.

Jones is expected to be granted a medical hardship allowing him to be eligible to play in 2011-12.
