Italian team offers 5-6 H.S. sophomore $750,000 deal

Aquille Carr is a 5-foot-6, 17-year-old high school sophomore. He’s also headed for a future in professional basketball.

As a Top 50 recruit in the class of 2013, Carr’s already being courted by Memphis, Kentucky, Syracuse, Xavier, LSU, Texas, Wake Forest and Arkansas. But if none of those schools appeal to him, he has another option:

An Italian team has already offered him a $750,000 contract.

That’s tempting to any high school baller, but Carr’s not quite ready to make that jump.

“I would be interested in [playing abroad] one day,” Carr told Joe Davis of Scouts Focus. “It was fun over there. I just want to keep [the Roma offer] in mind. I don’t want to make my decision so fast. But perhaps we might do that.”

Carr impressed Lottomatica Virtus Roma during a tournament in April when he helped lead the United States team to the gold medal at the Junior International Tournament. Cameron Smith of Prep Rally says Carr was the best player of the tourney – averaging more than 40 points a game – and was carried off by Italian fans after one game.

Roma’s also the same club who signed current Milwaukee Bucks star Brandon Jennings to a three-year, $1.2 million contract when he came out of high school in 2009.

But that’s not for Carr quite yet. He told Jeff Borzello that he plans to return to Patterson (Md.) next season and spend the summer on the AAU circuit again. Italy will still be there.
