Maryland coach Gary Williams will retire, according to Jeff Goodman of FOXSports.com.
The school later confirmed the news with a press release. A press conference will be Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
“It’s the right time,” Williams said in the release. “My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here. I couldn’t have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here.”
Williams, 66, coached the Terps the past 22 seasons and won the national title in 2002. He’s reached the NCAA tournament 14 times at Maryland, been to two Final Fours, won three ACC regular-season titles and one conference tournament crown. He’s 461-252 overall at the school.
Maryland was 19-14 last season and finished tied for seventh in the ACC.
He also coached at American, Boston College and Ohio State before returning to coach his alma mater in 1989.
His overall record is 668-380.
