Gonzaga’s Goodson to transfer, try his hand at football

Demetri Goodson’s hoops career peaked at Gonzaga. So he’s transferring.

And switching sports.

The school sent out a release that Goodson, who would’ve been a senior next season, has requested a release. One report indicates he may head to Texas A&M.

“I would like to thank my coaches and staff for the opportunity to play here. I also want to thank the city of Spokane and all of the Zags fans who have supported me over the years. It’s been an awesome experience,” Goodson said in the statement.

Goodson, a 5-11 point guard, is a two-year starter who averaged 5.2 points and 2.6 assists last season. His departure could open a scholarship for USC transfer Bryce Jones.

“He wants to finish his NCAA eligibility playing football,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said in the statement. “After having convinced us he would finish his degree then we were all in support of his decision. He has been a great teammate and I have the utmost respect for his toughness and he always played and practiced hard.”

Still, the football decision isn’t completely out of left field. His older brother is Carolina Panthers’ running back Mike Goodson (and also played for A&M). And his cousin, Jakar Hamilton, plays safety for Georgia.

If Goodson’s football career ever has a highlight like this one, it might just be worth the switch.
