Kerr says First Four should just be BCS schools

Steve Kerr’s done fine work as a color analyst in CBS’ three-man booth during the NCAA tournament. His insights are solid, he doesn’t step on takes from co-analyst Clark Kellogg and rolls with the play-by-play of Jim Nance.

In all, he’s earned some fans. But this won’t sit well with some of them.

In a wide-ranging interview with Michael Hiestand of USA Today, Kerr talked about several items, but the most interesting was this:

But Kerr also suggested the so-called First Four could be tweaked: “Have all eight teams in those from power conferences — just the bubble teams rather than league winners — going head-to-head.”

The First Four this season featured four games. Two were between teams who earned automatic bids; the other two games were between teams that earned at-large berths. Two of those at-large berths (VCU and UAB) weren’t from the power conferences, but Kerr’s point remains. Don’t make the small schools who won their conferences tournaments play an extra game.
