Rick Pitino was on the shortlist for coach of the year this season, but that probably should’ve been expected given his salary.
Louisville’s coach will make $7.5 million this season, according to USA Today’s analysis of coaching contracts and other compensation documents.
Part of Pitino’s massive deal relates to a $3.6 million bonus for completing three years of his contract. He also gets massive bonuses for tournament wins and high grade-point averages among his players. He may very well be worth it, though. Louisville made more than $25 million in revenue last season.
Behind Pitino are Duke’s Mike Kryzewski and Kentucky’s John Calipari, both of whom make right around $4 million. The complete table of all 68 coaches in the NCAA tournament is here, and a snippet is below.
On the opposite end of the spectrum? Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart ($424.000), Richmond’s Chris Mooney ($363,339) and Morehead State’s Donnie Tyndall (($179,000) all of whom won at least one NCAA tournament game.
Northern Colorado’s B.J. Hill ($85,000) was the lowest salaried coach.
Ten coaches weren’t included in the analysis.
