Washington’s Thomas takes the (bold? dumb?) leap

The standard “enters draft, won’t hire an agent” doesn’t apply to Washington guard Isaiah Thomas. Mostly because Thomas hasn’t hired an agent – yet.

The junior point guard held a conference call Thursday in which he told reporters, “yes, it is a goodbye.”

“Although it was a tough decision, I have decided to forgo my senior season and enter my name into this year’s NBA draft. At this time I will not hire an agent,” Thomas said in a statement. “Over the past three years I’ve enjoyed every single minute of my Washington Husky career. I am very thankful to have played for a great coach like coach (Lorenzo) Romar and our entire coaching staff.”

The two-time all-Pac-10 selection has until May 8 to return to school if he doesn’t hire an agent, but what part of that statement read like he won’t? He’s gone. It’s unclear how NBA teams will view the 5-8 guard, though.

He’s quick with the ball, but not overly fast. He’s aggressive and thrives at getting into the lane, but is inconsistent at finishing his shot. He’s a gamer, but can be selfish with the ball. But there’s no arguing his production – he’s sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list and third in assists – and his ability to make an instant impact. (It’s telling that he’s rated as the 75th best overall prospect by Draftexpress.com.)

Thomas said he’s two quarters short of graduating and intends on getting his degree.
