Florida says Boynton’s bum ankle ‘fine’ for BYU, Fredette

All eyes will be on Florida’s Kenny Boynton tonight. Especially his ankle.

The sophomore guard will be the main man responsible for checking BYU’s Jimmer Fredette in their Southeast Regional semifinal game in New Orleans. Fredette, the nation’s leading scorer, is averaging nearly 35 points a game in his last seven outings. He’s not incredibly quick, but he’ll be a load for Boynton.

In good news for the Gators, Boynton says he’s at full health. He suffered a nasty ankle sprain during Saturday’s win over UCLA, but practiced Wednesday and said he didn’t feel anything amiss.

“It didn’t give me any problems. I did everything fully,” he told reporters.

Florida coach Billy Donovan echoed those remarks.

“He appeared to be moving well, has not said or given me any indication he’s having any issues or any problems with his ankle,” Donovan said. “I didn’t notice anything different with him favoring it, trying to protect himself at all in practice.

“We expect him to be fine [Thursday] night and to be able to play.”

Boynton, listed at 6-2, 183, gives up a few pounds to Fredette (6-2, 195), but is quicker (when healthy) and could pose a problem with his reach.

Also, expect Boynton to be motivated. Fredette scored 37 points in the Cougars’ win vs. the Gators in last year’s NCAA tournament.
