March Madness TV ratings up; MMOD doing even better

Feel like you watched more NCAA tournament games than usual? That’s because you did.

Ratings for the 2011 tourney were up 14 percent from last year as games spread across CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV averaged 8.4 million viewers. That’s an improvement from when the games were only on CBS and often regionalized so the network could switch games.

Then again, Turner Sports chief David Levy said he expected those types of ratings, which certainly benefited from more than a dozen close finishes, seven of which came during the weekend. The networks said they also received positive feedback about having games start later on Sunday.

Some didn’t even watch the TV. More impressive were figures for March Madness on Demand. Visits to the web site and on mobile devices were up 47 percent from last year. That added up to 26.7 million visits during the first four days of the tournament.

I know I was watching games at work. Guess you did, too.
