N.C. State’s new coach sure to cause butterfly effect

spt-110315-sidney-lowefired_standard

The Sidney Lowe era is over at N.C. State. So begins the offseason’s most important coaching search.

That’s not an attempt to curry favor with Wolfpack fans (though it can’t hurt), but a statement reflecting the impact the potential hire could have on the college coaching landscape.

Texas’ Rick Barnes and Arizona’s Sean Miller are reportedly at the top of N.C. State’s list. After them, Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, Minnesota’s Tubby Smith and Georgia’s Mark Fox will receive some attention (though the Fox rumors are quickly dying). The list will go on and on until AD Debbie Yow finalizes the deal.

(And I agree with Luke DeCock: Brad Stevens should be No. 1 on the list.)

Unless N.C. State pulls a coach from a mid-major school, the hire’s sure to affect some other program from a BCS conference. If Barnes left Texas or Miller left Arizona, those coaching searches would affect more schools, their eventual replacements would affect more, and so on and so on.

So let the coaching dominoes begin.
