San Diego St. trying to make historic Final Four leap

San Diego State could go from 0 to Final Four. That’s quite the switch.

The Aztecs (32-2) haven’t won a game in their six NCAA tournament trips. As the No. 2 seed in the West Region, they’ll never have a better chance to win a game and possibly go even further. The last time a team made that kind of jump was George Mason in 2006. The Pats had been 0-3 before their Final Four run.

But first thing’s first. Beating 15 seed Northern Colorado would get that first win off the to-do list.

“We have a wonderful opportunity to win our first game,” SDSU coach Steve Fisher said. “We still haven’t won a game yet. We need to go in and not look anywhere beyond Northern Colorado, and knowing as much as we can and preparing as hard as we can to win that first game.”

Playing the Aztecs’ favor is that they get to play in Tucson, Ariz., this week. They make the regional semifinals, they’re in Anaheim, Calif., a short drive for their rowdy fans. That’s a nice advantage to have.

Getting to the Final Four has never seemed more manageable.
