Washington’s Overton charged with giving alcohol to minors

Add another problem for Washington’s growing list of issues. Except this one’s off the court.

The Seattle city attorney has charged senior Venoy Overton with providing alcohol to a minor, stemming for an allegation by a 16-year-old girl that Overton sexually assaulted her Jan. 8 at an apartment in Seattle. He allegedly picked up the girl and her friend, also 16, and bought alcohol along the way.

Prosecutors didn’t file third-degree rape charges because of questions .

Overton has remained on the team during the investigation, but will not play during the Pac-10 tournament.

A starter since an injury to Abdul Gaddy on Jan. 4, Overton is averaging 6 points, 3.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds a game.

Washington (20-10 overall, 11-7 in Pac-10) was the preseason favorite to win the Pac-10, but finished third and may not make the NCAA tournament.

UPDATE: Coach Lorenzo Romar had this to say about Overton:

“As far as I’m concerned, behavior needs to change. We need to learn from our mistakes,” Romar said. “Mistakes are going to be made. Every situation is different. I don’t think you handle every situation the same.”

Romar said Overton’s punishment was coming. He just wanted to wait until prosecutors made a decision.

“It was my intention all along that if something were to happen that further action would be taken from the action that’s already been taken internally,” Romar said.
