Thursday’s slate and what to watch

For UCLA to keep pace with Arizona atop the Pac-10 race, it’ll have to do something it hasn’t done since 2004: Beat Washington on the road.

The Bruins (21-8, 12-4) are tied for the conference lead, but face a Washington team that’s probably the most perplexing team in the nation this season. The Huskies (19-9, 10-6) are beloved by computer rankings, can’t seem to win a road game and have already beaten the Bruins once this season. Yet, after getting thrashed by in-state rival Washington State on Sunday, it’s unclear which UW will show up.

Not sure the Bruins know either. (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2)

(All times ET)

St. John’s at Seton Hall, 7 p.m. (ESPN2): Big night for Steve Lavin’s squad. The Johnnies (19-9, 11-5) could notch their first 20-win season since 2003 and extend their season-high win streak to seven games. At this point, there’s little question that a team once questioned for its play once it left MSG can win on the road. (It’s won at West Virginia, Providence, Cincy, Marquette and ‘Nova.) Question now is: Can St. John’s avoid a stumble against the Big East’s bottom dwellers and earn a double-bye for the conference tournament?

Tennessee at South Carolina, 7 p.m. (ESPN): When someone figures out Tennessee, let the NCAA tournament seeding committee know. Seeding the Vols – or even giving them a spot in the Big Dance – is a perplexing question. How do view a team that’s beaten Pitt, ‘Nova, Vandy and Memphis, but lost to Charlotte, College of Charleston and Miss State? Winning at South Carolina, which has beaten Clemson and Vandy at home, only adds to the puzzlement.

Georgia Tech at Wake Forest, 8 p.m. (ESPN-FC, ACCN): If the Demon Deacons (8-21, 1-13) are to avoid going down as one of the worst teams in ACC history – though it may be too late – beating the Yellow Jackets tonight would be essential. A win’s equally important for G.T. (11-17, 3-11) to take some of the heat off coach Paul Hewitt.
