Kemba’s not Player of the Year, he’s just a superhero

Let’s talk Kemba Walker, shall we?

Connecticut’s outstanding junior guard no longer leads of the national player of the year race because of some poor shooting games and tough UConn losses during Big East play. He might not even make be first-team All-American.

That idea drives Ken Davis crazy.

He devoted his latest column to why Walker’s played on another level all season. Yes, the guy takes a lot of shots – that’s not a bad thing – but his year’s been about more than stats. He’s elevated the Huskies from a team few expected to be relevant in the Big East into a Top 25 mainstay and a Final Four darkhorse.

As Ken writes:

I’ve got him down for my Superhero of the Year award. He’s a Superhero because he has been asked to do so much and carry so much weight for his team. It was that way in October and it’s still that way now, as we embark on a wild and crazy March.

Walker has responded, game after game, without concern for the toll it might take on him. No player in college basketball has been asked to do more for his team this season. That’s a big statement. But it’s true.

Kemba as a superhero? I might buy that. I’ll just curious to see what his March kryptonite will be.
