DeShaun Thomas snaps out of his slump in a big way

spt-110227-deshaun-thomas.standard

DeShaun Thomas came into his freshman season with the reputation of being a big time scorer.

He didn’t disappoint early on, as the former Indiana Mr. Basketball and one of just three Hoosier State natives to score 3,000 points in his high school career developed into a hired gun off the bench for Thad Matta. That changed in Big Ten play, however. After reaching double figures eight times during non-conference play, Thomas had only scored in double figures once in Big Ten.

In fact, over the past month, Thomas has managed to score just 13 points in a seven game span.

That all changed on Sunday.

With Jared Sullinger, David Lighty, and Dallas Lauderdale in foul trouble in the first half, Thomas went off. He finished with 22 points, two off of his career high, including one 3:36 stretch in the first half where Thomas scored all of the points in a 14-3 Buckeye run that turned the game into a rout.

So thanks to Thomas, Ohio State ended up winning 82-61 despite getting just five points on 0-2 shooting in 12 minutes from their potential national player of the year.

That’s got to be comforting.
