It’s been a wild season when Washington can still win the Pac-10

Here was Washington coach Lorenzo Romar on Friday, trying to keep his team focused for today’s game against in-state rival Washington State – and not think about the outside possibility of winning a second Pac-10 title in three seasons.

“A lot has to happen for that to take place,” he said. “We can’t lose sight of Sunday. We have a week and a half of conference play and we have to take advantage of it and not get sidetracked by other issues.”

Don’t look now, coach. Because Arizona’s failed trip to Los Angeles resulted in a pair of losses, and threw the Pac-10 race into one, big, jumbled mess.

Bad for the Wildcats. Good for the Huskies.

Washington, 19-8 overall, 10-5 in Pac-10 play, could move one game back of the Bruins and Wildcats, both of whom are 12-4 in conference. Two games are left after the UW-Wazzu game.

So let’s handicap this thing, shall we?

Washington plays host to UCLA and USC on Thursday and Saturday. Given how good the Huskies are at home, it’s reasonable to assume they’ll win both, giving them the series sweep over the Bruins.

As for Arizona, it plays host to Oregon State on Thursday and Oregon on Saturday. The Beavers haven’t won a road game all year, so that’s a W for the Wildcats.

But Oregon? The Ducks have won three road games all year, all in conference play: USC, Stanford and Oregon State. That won’t fill Huskies fans will loads of confidence, but it should be enough to make anyone think twice that this thing’s over.

Thank you, Pac-10. Thank you for being so entertaining.
