Georgetown thriving as JTIII evolves as a coach

spt-110222-jt3_standard

Georgetown’s won nine of its last 10 games, is half a game behind Notre Dame for second place in the Big East and may snag a top 3 seed in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

Not a bad run under John Thompson III. Does this mean he’s finally among the game’s elite coaches?

In six years at Georgetown, JTIII’s reached a Final Four, won two Big East regular-season titles and won more than 70 percent of his games. By nearly any measure, he’s far better than the average college coach.

So. Back to the question. Is he evolving into an elite coach? That is, is JTIII becoming more and more like his dad?

That’s really a question for those in the know. And that means the guys over at CasualHoya.

This excellent read hits on five aspects of Thompson’s coaching style and how he’s improved on those areas this season. The verdict is that JTII’s on his way, but that’s hardly the end of the post, which then delves into his dad’s coaching system, how he built Georgetown into a power and what his practices were like.

It’s good stuff.

As for JTIII, we’ll know more about his elite coaching status in another month or so. March is when those reputations are made.
