Tyshawn Taylor has been suspended for a violation of team rules

Kansas head coach Bill Self announced today that starting point guard Tyshawn Taylor has been suspended indefinitely from the team for the dreaded “violation of team rules.” He won’t play tonight against Oklahoma State, but the length of the suspension has not been announced.

“Although we are disappointed in Tyshawn, he will remain a member of our team and practice with our team until he is reinstated for competition,” Self said.

The Jayhawks do have depth in their back court. Both Brady Morningstar and Tyrel Reed can functionally handle the point, while Josh Selby and Elijah Johnson are both talented youngsters that have been waiting for an opportunity to get more minutes.

There is a bigger issue here, however.

The biggest question mark regarding the Jayhawks this season has been maturity and leadership. Both of the Morris twins have had a penchant for drawing intentional fouls as a result of elbows (Marcus was tossed from a game earlier this season for an elbow he hit Cal’s Harper Kamp on the chin with). Elijah Johnson has been visually displeased with substitution patterns and drew a technical against Kansas State. And have we all forgotten about last year’s fight between the basketball team and the football team or the incident with Markieff Morris and the BB gun?

I don’t expect this suspension to have too much of an effect on the Jayhawk’s on the court, but this incident is another red flag flying high in Lawrence.
