Friday’s Morning Shootaround: Thursday was quite bubbly

St. John’s 89, No. 9 UConn 72: See here.

No. 24 Vanderbilt 81, Alabama 77: See here.

One last note -- Alabama lost this game despite shooting over 55% from the floor and nearly 80% from the line. How does that happen? When a defense that usually gives up 0.86 PPP allows 81 points on 64 possessions, or 1.27 PPP.

Illinois 71, No. 25 Minnesota 62: Bruce Weber benched his stars. Demetri McCamey and Mike Tisdale came off the bench for the Illini at Minnesota, and it worked. McCamey scored a team-high 17 points and added four assists as Illinois picked up a must-win over the Gophers. The win is all the more impressive when you consider Trevor Mbakwe and Ralph Sampson combined for 33 points, 27 rebounds, and six blocks. Minnesota appears NIT bound now. They simply don’t have the guard play with two point guards transferring out in the past year and Al Nolen getting hurt.

Michigan State 75, Penn State 57: Kalin Lucas scored 24 points and Draymond Green played one of his best games as a Spartan, finishing with 15 points, 14 boards, 10 assists, three steals, and two blocks in the Spartans win. Of note -- Delvon Roe fell hard and awkwardly on his knee on the last play of the game.

No. 23 St. Mary’s 65, Santa Clara 59: Mickey McConnell had 25 points and four assists while Rob Jones added 10 points and 16 boards as the Gaels kept their lead in first place in the WCC.

Washington 109, Cal 77: The Huskies took their frustrations out on the Bears, as Isaiah Thomas had 23 points, nine assists, and a career-high six three pointers to lead U-Dub. The Huskies scored a season high 1.45 PPP.
