Is the ACC a lost cause when it comes to March?

spt-110206-gt_standard

Times are tough in the ACC.

Wake Forest stinks. Virginia and Georgia Tech aren’t much better. Clemson, B.C. and Virginia Tech are decidedly average. And N.C. State’s fans are ready for Sidney Lowe to be gone (yesterday).

What’ll that mean in March when they’re handing out NCAA tournament bids? Are Duke and North Carolina the only sure things? And how much will that change in a month? Right now, Dave Ommen has the conference pegged for five bids (Duke, UNC, BC, Va. Tech and FSU).

But whether that lasts is a little trickier. For that, let’s turn to a Triangle writer, shall we? We need someone who’s seen all these teams play more than just the occasional ESPN game.

Ken Tysiac of the Raleigh News & Observer hits on that question in his midseason awards column and rates the Eagles, Tigers, Seminoles and Hokies as contenders, meaning they have a ton of work to do. He also includes Maryland in that group, which seems fair. The Terps can’t seem to get a marquee win, though they’re certainly good enough.

Everyone else? No chance.

And check out the rest of Ken’s column for some assorted ACC goodies, including best win, best comeback and his coach, player and rookie of the year.
