An occasional feature where we compile quotes from the weekend’s meaningful games. Read on and enjoy.
“Every game is a white-out, a red-out, a black-out, an orange-out. Something out, and it’s sold out.”
— Kentucky coach John Calipari, on the ferocious road crowds his team’s seen this season.
“Last year we started out 1-3 and lost by 17 on the road twice. We haven’t done that yet. … Everyone else panicked, but we didn’t. We ended up going to the Sweet 16.”
— Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, whose Huskies lost their third straight game on Saturday.
“I don’t think it’s too early (to think about the tournament). I don’t want to feel the way I felt last year. I wish we had thought about it more last year as a team.”
— Illinois senior Bill Cole, after a loss to Northwestern that dropped the Illini to 15-8 overall.
“They can tell you we haven’t lost, but they couldn’t tell you how many we’ve won in a row. They have a good way about them.”
— Ohio State coach Thad Matta on his team’s 24-0 start.
“They’re starting to call me Rasheed Wallace.”
— Kansas junior Marcus Morris, but not for his rebounding or low-post scoring. He was jokingly referring to his technical foul vs. Nebraska.
“I didn’t even hear what he said, to be honest with you,” Fredette said. “At this point, it doesn’t matter. I don’t really care what he says. I was just worried about our team, and going out there and getting a victory. That’s what we did.”
— BYU senior Jimmer Fredette on comments made by UNLV’s Tre’Von Willis, who said Fredette “doesn’t want to pass the ball.” Fredette scored 29 points and had seven assists.
“I don’t know who could have beaten Utah State tonight.”
— Boise State coach Leon Rose. His Broncos lost 77-49.
“I won’t say it was a statement because we had a lot of great players play great tonight. … But as a point guard of this team, I do sort of feel like the leader and I have to lead by example.”
— North Carolina freshman Kendall Marshall, who had 16 assists in a win over Florida State.
“I’m not going to talk about any calls like that. I said something to the refs. But I very rarely…I think I’ve gotten, you know…I don’t get into that. It’s not going to change. It’s over.”
— St. Louis coach Rick Majerus, who got so mad after one call during a loss to Xavier, he pounded his hand on the scorer’s table and damaged a laptop.
“I did challenge them on the sidelines a couple of times, really challenged them about what they were doing or not doing and the effort they were not giving. I didn’t want to hear a damn excuse — I didn’t use that word exactly. ‘I hear one excuse and I will put you on the bench so hard that you’ll still be here when we come back here next year.”
— UConn coach Jim Calhoun after a 61-59 win over Seton Hall.
“I think it would selfish of me to take full responsibility for the loss, even though I let us down a few key plays. I’m sure everyone feels responsible. We had plenty of chances to win.”
— Cal junior Harper Kamp, who played 55 minutes and scored a career-high 33 points in a triple-overtime loss to Arizona.
