Howland says one Bruin ‘really immature’

Until I read the BIAH morning dump today, I had no idea Ben Howland thought Reeves Nelson needed to grow up.

The sophomore forward is UCLA’s leading scorer and rebounder, but couldn’t finish Thursday’s loss to Arizona because he fouled out (after notching a 24-10 game). But the Tucson crowd started heckling Nelson with the old “step, step, sit down” chant as he walked to the bench.

So he had a little fun with it, sitting down, then standing up, then sitting down. Howland was not pleased.

“All they’re trying to do is to get you to react to it, so it’s actually serving what someone in the crowd tries to do,” Howland told the L.A. Times. “It’s a little kid’s thing and he’s reacting to that. It’s like, come on. We’re losing, just sit down and don’t react to the crowd. . . . That’s really immature.”

Then again, maybe Howland was just venting. Nelson played 39 minutes and posted another double-double during Saturday’s win against Arizona State.
