Michigan St. boots Lucious for ‘remainder of the season’

Michigan State has dismissed Korie Lucious from the team for an unspecified violation of team rules.

“Unfortunately, Korie Lucious displayed conduct detrimental to the program,” coach Tom Izzo said in a statement released by the school. “My focus is on this team for the remainder of the season.”

The junior guard averaged 6.5 points and 4.1 assists in 18 games this season. He was expected to be a reliable presence at point guard alongside senior Kalin Lucas, but Lucious struggled with his shot all season. Now he’s done. (Whether he returns next season is up for grabs, if the release’s wording means anything.)

“Unfortunately, I let my teammates, my coaches, and myself down, and wish them the best for the season,” Lucious said in the same statement. (His Twitter page didn’t shed much light on the dismissal, either.)

He was suspended to start the season because of a reckless driving charge.

That leaves the Spartans (12-7) with Lucas and freshman Keith Appling as the primary ball-handlers, though senior shooting guard Durrell Summers could be asked to step into a more prominent guard role.

We’ll see how much Izzo adjusts when the Spartans play host to Michigan on Thursday.
