Vols reach up, steal a win on crazy buzzer-beater

They’re a little miffed in Athens, Georgia. Hard not to be.

Here’s the setup: Tennessee and Georgia are tied 57-57 when Vols freshman Tobias Harris launches an airball from the corner. Forward Brian Williams, standing behind Georgia’s Chris Barnes, somehow grabbed the rebound and – while falling backward and with Barnes swiping at the ball – managed to throw up a shot that beat the buzzer.

Officials let ‘em play, confirmed Williams’ shot beat the buzzer and called it for the Vols.

Final score: Vols 59, Bulldogs 57.

Williams was understandably ebullient.

“I’m like Kobe,” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Last shot. Fadeaway. “SportsCenter” Top 10. That’s the biggest shot I’ve ever made ... with no time left. It’s the greatest feeling ever. I’m just glad it counted.”

And Barnes? Well, he manned up. He didn’t blame Williams for going over the back, and shouldered the blame.

“It was a heart-breaking moment,” he told the paper. “I feel like I let the team down at that moment.”

Buck up, kid. I’ve watched the replay five times and still can’t believe my eyes. Some days, a team just gets lucky.
