ASU ruing the day Derrick Williams got away (especially on Saturday)

Arizona forward Derrick Williams smoked Arizona State for a career-high 31 points Saturday during an 80-69 win, which dropped ASU to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10.

It gets worse.

Williams was this close to attending ASU.

“Coach (Herb) Sendek and (assistant coach Scott) Pera, they showed a lot of interest in me,” Williams told the Arizona Republic. “I liked the staff a lot. They were young, and I really felt like I would get along great with them there.

“It really came down to what offensive and defensive style I could fit in to. Nothing against them, but their zone and some of the offenses that they run, it’s not really to my type of style.”

So what’s worse? The verbal dig or watching the sophomore forward (now 2-1 vs. the Sun Devils) hit 8 of 12 shots, made 15 of 16 free throws, and grabbed 10 rebounds?

If there’s any consolation for the Sun Devils, their Feb. 13 rematch against the Wildcats (15-3) will probably be the last time they’ll be tormented by Williams, who’s on the shortlist for national player of the year.

This time next year, he’ll be in the NBA.
