Calipari’s on a mission to extend Kentucky’s bench

John Calipari is determined to extend Kentucky’s bench past the sixth man. That means getting Eloy Vargas, Jon Hood, Stacey Poole or Jarrod Polson into game shape – something Calipari’s overseeing personally.

But, as John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Leader writes, nobody’s happy about it.

“It isn’t working,” he cracked Tuesday. “But it’s early.”

Cal said they’ve had four workouts.

“One of them, and I won’t tell you which one, after 15 minutes threw up,” Calipari said. “That’s where they are right now. They’re far behind.”

He cites a lack of conditioning and toughness as the main issues. He needs one of those guys for extra fouls, to spell Terrence Jones and Josh Harrelson and contribute whenever possible.

And it’s going to happen. Calipari’s sure of it.

“My whole mind-set is Stacey and Jon Hood and Eloy are going to help us before this season is over,” Calipari told the paper.

“It’s on. That’s how I’m looking at it.”
