Kentucky AD: Kanter appeals were like ‘beating our head against the wall’

Count Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart among those confused by the NCAA ruling Enes Kaneter permanently ineligible.

Among other things, he called the decision arbitrary and unfair.

“It has been difficult to understand,” he told the Lexington Herald-Leader. “I guess that means on any given day a decision can go whatever direction they want it to go and that can’t be used moving forward or going backwards. ... There seems to be a moving target for what’s permissible and not permissible. It’s just a really interesting time to figure out the direction of the organization of the NCAA.”

Count me among those not surprised by this news. Barnhart’s supposed to back his school. What’s interesting is that he sounds completely and utterly defeated by the whole thing. Thus, a lawsuit – at least by the school – is unlikely.

“We certainly thought we had a legitimate case or we wouldn’t have kept going,” he said. “But there are times when you begin to think we’re beating our head against the wall because it isn’t going to change, and it didn’t.”
