Bruiser Flint, Drexel’s head coach, has a bit of a reputation of being an intense coach.
There is nothing wrong with that. There are a lot of players out there that like playing for a coach that displays the same passion and emotion that he demands from his players each and every game. The problem, however, is when he allows that passion and emotion to get the best of him.
We mentioned it in this morning’s shootaround, but Bruiser got run last night, earning two technicals with fifteen seconds left in a game that was still very winnable. Before we get into the details, here’s the video. The good stuff starts at the :40 mark.
Now, Drexel is down 47-46 to VCU on the road. Chris Fouch misses a three that would have given the lead. Flint thought that the refs were missing a number of fouls down the stretch, and he snapped when nothing was called on the rebound. His two technicals got him ejected (and suspended for Drexel’s next game against Delaware) and gave VCU four free throws, which Joey Rodriguez hit. A one point game was all of a sudden a five point game.
With fifteen ticks on the clock, those four points make a huge difference.
There are no guarantees that Drexel would have won, but at worst they would have had one more shot to tie the game.
And in a game of that magnitude -- a matchup of conference favorites -- Flint has to be more responsible than that.
