Thursday’s slate and what to watch

If I could pick one rivalry game to watch, it might be the Crosstown Shootout.

Might be. Sure, Duke-Carolina, Kansas-Missouri and Kentucky-Louisville – among others – would need to be considered, but the annual Cincinnati-Xavier game is one of the most intense, entertaining and best rivalries going. It may not always be pretty basketball, but it’s always memorable.

In fact, it’s the centerpiece of our new Blogger spotlight feature. So there’s that. And it’s the one must-see game for Thursday night. So there’s that. As for the rest, keep reading.

Northwestern at Illinois, 9 p.m. (ESPN2): Once again, the Wildcats have another game capable of boosting their NCAA tournament résumé. Bad news. The Illini don’t lose at home. Not when Demetri McCamey’s playing like this.

California at Arizona, 10:30 p.m.(FOX Sports Net): After the debacle at Oregon State, the Wildcats can’t afford to drop one here. They catch a break with the Bears losing freshman guard Gary Franklin. He was a ballhog, but he could shoot.

Montana at Northern Colorado, 9:05 p.m.: The Grizzlies are the class of the Big Sky, having already beaten Northern Arizona at home. Until the return trip to Flagstaff, this is their toughest league game.

College of Charleston at Furman, 7 p.m.: If Furman can’t hold court, it takes a step back in what’s going to be a tight race for the Southern Conference title.
