This has been a good couple of days for the bottom of the BCS conferences.
On Sunday night it was Oregon State, a team that had lost to Utah Valley State, George Washington, and Seattle, completing a sweep of the Arizona schools by knocking off the Wildcats.
On Monday, it was Auburn, the same team that has lost to (get ready for this list) UNC-Asheville, Samford, Campbell, Jacksonville, Rutgers, South Florida, and Presbyterian, that knocked off Florida State 65-60.
What?
With North Carolina still a ways away from being as good as they were predicted to be in the preseason and Virginia Tech decimated by injury, many believed that the Seminoles were in line to finish second in the ACC.
If that’s the case, than Duke is going to have a pretty easy path to an undefeated season and an ACC Tournament title.
The Seminoles looked downright atrocious offensively against Auburn. They shot 35.0% from the floor for the game and 5-26 from three. They missed 13 of their 26 free throw attempts and turned the ball over 14 times. The only reason that Florida State was able to keep it close was their ability to rebound the ball on the offensive end of the floor.
Down the stretch, it was Auburn that made all the clutch plays. The Tigers hit the big threes. They made their free throws late. They got the important stops.
I love Chris Singleton. He’s a terrific defender and will one day be a very good player in the NBA. But when the next James Posey is your best offensive weapon, you don’t have a very potent basketball team.
The bottom line from tonight?
The second best team -- and anyone with a shot of making the NCAA Tournament outside of Duke -- is completely up for grabs in the ACC.
The one thing I’m sure of, however, is that Wake Forest has surged into the lead in the competition for the worst BCS conference basketball team in the country.
