Duke’s closer to learning if Irving will play again this season

Baby steps. It’s all about baby steps.

Kyrie Irving’s toe injury is forcing Duke to take things slowly. That includes simply establishing a timetable for when he might return.

The latest? Mike DeCourcy reported that the freshman point guard will have his bum right toe examined next week. After that, doctors will consider the next course of treatment and when/if he could return.

“He saw a specialist over the exam period, he’s in a cast and he’s still out an indefinite amount of time. It will be a long time,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the Devils’ win last week. “Like I’ve said a number of times, it could be the whole season.”

If Irving needs surgery on the toe, he’ll likely be out the season.

Do they miss his 17.4 points a game? Not yet. Irving hasn’t played since a Dec. 4 win against Butler. The Devils have gone 3-0 without him, but they’ve also played Bradley, St. Louis and Elon, all at home. Not exactly a test for the nation’s No. 1 team.

Duke opens ACC play on Sunday at Miami.
