Calipari, Self nominated for a peace prize

Kansas’ Bill Self and Kentucky’s John Calipari coach at two of college basketball’s premier schools and will forever be linked by the 2008 NCAA championship game. Few coaches can match their success.

Add peace prize nomination to their résumés.

Calipari and Self are among the seven coaches up for the first United Nations NGO Positive Peace Awards. According to the organization, those coaches are recognized for contributions to their communities which exemplify and demonstrate the word “positive.”

“Not only are these great coaches, but they are wonderful role models as well,” Celebrate Positive president and CEO Scott Pederson said in a statement. “They make the world a more positive place in which to live.”

Other coaches include IUPUI’s Ron Hunter, Glenforest school’s William Knopf, South Dakota State’s Scott Nagy, Tennessee Tech’s Mike Sutton and Oklahoma women’s coach Sherri Coale.

The list will eventually be pared down to five finalists. Winners will be announced during the week of Sept. 19-25, 2011.
