Gun shots outside the funeral for Marion Denmon

You have really got to feel for Marcus Denmon and his family.

You remember. Last Wednesday, Denmon put together one of the most impressive performances I’ve seen in a long time when when he scored 19 points after halftime, including the game winning basket in overtime, just one day after his cousin passed away. His cousin Marion was shot on Friday when the car he was riding in ended up in the crossfire of a rolling gun fight.

The news today is just that much more heartbreaking:

Mourners at a Kansas City funeral had to dive for cover early this afternoon after shots rang out near a Baptist church where services were being held at 25th and Benton Boulevard.

The shots were reported about 12:20 p.m. at the funeral of homicide victim Marion Denmon III, a cousin to University of Missouri basketball player Marcus Denmon, who was at the service along with members of the Mizzou coaching staff.

Ugh.

There isn’t much else to say.

According to the KC Star’s report, no one was injured by the gunfire, which is a good thing. One woman may have broken her arm slipping on ice outside the church.

Losing a member of your family, especially someone so young to something so senseless, is tragic in and of itself. To have the exact same thing happen right outside the funeral service for the young man? I can’t even imagine the terror experienced by the 400 people in that church.

My heart goes out to each and every member of the Denmon family.
