Flu, cold shooting nearly ended SDSU’s perfect start

San Diego State’s perfect start narrowly avoided an ignominious end Monday night.

The Aztecs were without leading scorer and rebounder Kawhi Leonard, sophomore guard Chase Tapley for a home game against Cal Poly, which shouldn’t have been a problem. They’re talented enough to beat a team like Cal Poly, but weren’t helped by an atrocious shooting night.

SDSU made just 34.8 percent of its shots and missed all 18 3-point attempts in its 51-45 win.

(That tied the mark for most 3s attempted this season without a make. Of course, that was by a losing team – Ohio. The last time someone shot that poorly from beyond the arc and won was Dayton – 0 for 24 – vs. Auburn in 2008.)

“It was a bit like running in mud at the offensive end,” coach Steve Fisher said afterward. “The harder we tried, the more we missed - 0 for 18 from 3-point range, that’s not us. But we played hard. Obviously we could not throw it in the ocean. And I think that sometimes starts to happen when one guy misses one that’s wide open, then he starts to question himself. It shouldn’t happen but it did for us tonight.”

Tapley was sent home. Leonard was one bench and available if absolutely necessary, but Fisher decided against it with about 10 minutes left in the game.

SDSU gets nearly a week to rest until UC Santa Barbara comes to town on Saturday. If Fisher’s team wants to get to 12-0, it may want to start downing some Vitamin C and getting some sleep.
