NAIA school wins by 100 points -- but it’s not even a record

A sentence that just doesn’t seem possible: West Virginia Tech’s 157-57 win was well off the NAIA record for margin of victory.

Winning by 100 points isn’t close? Not sure who should feel worse about that – West Virginia Tech or Ohio State-Mansfield, which got drilled for headline and not a spot in the record books.

The Golden Bears made 65 of 92 shots (70.7 percent) against the winless (0-7) Mavericks.

That wasn’t enough to best Oklahoma Christian’s 154-37 victory over Southwest Assemblies of God in 1981. (No, Billy Tubbs wasn’t coaching that team.)

Per the AP, here are the NCAA records for scoring margin:

The NCAA records are: Division I — Long Island University, 179-62 over Medgar Evers in 1997; Division II — Mississippi College, 168-50 over Dallas Bible, 1971; Division III — Lincoln, Pa., 201-78 over Ohio State-Marion in 2006.

So here’s a matchup I’d like to see: West Virginia Tech against D-II West Liberty, another West Virginia school. The Hilltoppers are 8-0 and have scored at least 105 points in every game this season. (They were the ones who scored 157 and 154 points in their first two wins this season.)

Might neede to provide oxygen on the sideline for that one.
